The Inn was built in 1891 for Mathew Burrows, a bachelor and owner/operator of the Great Eastern Clothing Store at Third Avenue West and Superior Street. Local architects, MacMillan and Radcliff were contracted to design the home to his specifications.
The design included a third floor ballroom to accommodate the lavish parties that Burrows would host. The home is unique in that it combines all of the Victorian styles in its exterior design; Shake Cottage, Queen Anne, straight Victorian, and Gothic. The interior boasts original woodwork, hand carved Lewis Sullivan designed fireplace mantle and bookcase, cathedral glass windows, and original period plumbing and lighting fixtures. The original floor plan is still in place with only a minor adjustment to the second floor to create a private bath.
Burrows sold the house in 1905 to a neighbor and it was soon turned into a boarding house. In later years it became an apartment building, being divided into twelve apartments. The house was rescued starting in the 1980’s by a series of enthusiastic homeowners who each added fine-tuning to the homes original period through meticulous restoration.
The home was opened as a Bed and Breakfast in 1988.
The current owners, Alan and Kathy Fink, continue to operate the B&B and welcome you to their historic inn.
