Welcome to Mathew S. Burrows 1890 Inn Our History... The Inn was built in 1891 for Mathew Burrows, a bachelor and owner/operator of the Great Eastern Clothing Store at Third Avenue West and Superior Street. Local architects, MacMillan and Radcliff were contracted to design the home to Burrows's specifications. The design included a third floor ballroom to accommodate the lavish parties that Burrows would host. The home is unique in that it combines all of the Victorian styles in its exterior design; Shake Cottage, Queen Anne, straight Victorian, and Gothic. The interior boasts original woodwork, hand carved Lewis Sullivan designed fireplace mantle and bookcase, cathedral glass windows, and original period plumbing and lighting fixtures. The original floor plan is still in place with only a minor adjustment to the second floor to create a private bath. Burrows sold the house in 1905 to a neighbor, and it was soon turned into a boarding house. In later years it became an apartment building, being divided into twelve apartments. The home was later purchased by the Ulland family who did the first major rehab on the property. June Perry and Pat Labiadie were the next owners, with June doing the fine-tuning of the period-design restoration. The home was opened as a Bed and Breakfast in 1988. The current owners, Alan and Kathy Fink continue to operate the B&B and are currently restoring the exterior Please continue on to tour our rooms. (click here) |
